Twenty-four entries, in the order the work happens
Every entry on the site, grouped by the stage it belongs to. No dropdown, no search: the whole register is on this page.
The Edit
4 entries- 1.1The ones you love go firstThe frames a photographer is attached to are usually attached to the memory of taking them, not to what is in them. An edit that survives is one where somebody else cannot tell which were difficult.
- 1.2Editing against a questionA body of work needs something it is trying to answer before it can be cut.
- 1.3The second passTime between passes does more than any method.
- 1.4Killing the obviousThe picture that explains the project usually flattens it.
Sequence
3 entries- 2.1Order as argumentTwo photographs side by side make a claim neither makes alone. Sequencing is building those claims deliberately.
- 2.2PaceDensity and rest. A run of similar frames reads as one; a break resets attention.
- 2.3The opening and the closeThe first sets terms, the last decides what the reader leaves with.
Scale
3 entriesThe Print
4 entries- 4.1Papers and blacksMatte papers cannot reach the black a gloss surface can. The choice sets the tonal floor before anything else.
- 4.2ToningA colour shift through the greys, historically chemical, now usually not.
- 4.3The test stripJudging exposure by comparison rather than by measurement.
- 4.4Dry downPrints darken as they dry, which catches everybody once.
The Book
4 entries- 5.1The gutterThe fold eats the centre of a spread, which decides what can be printed across one.
- 5.2The page turnThe reader controls the pace, and the turn is the only cut the maker fully owns.
- 5.3Paper stockWeight, surface and show-through as part of the edit.
- 5.4The dummyA blank bound mock-up, made before anything is committed.
